Diamonds: Baseball and Montblanc

Diamonds Are A Pens Best Friend

The 2011 World Series of Major League Baseball (MLB) doesn’t start until October 19th and for the many fans that means there are still hundreds of games left to watch. Like other sports, the true fans of MLB have a visceral connection to the game, one that is as entertaining to watch (and in some cases more entertaining) than the game itself. The amped up fans of baseball are fanatic about their teams and the players – able to quote historical facts, benchmarks and turning points to the day/time/year. But what I didn’t know, and had to find out the hard way, was that as fanatical as the fans are about their team, they can be even more obsessed with the field that their team plays on. Enter the baseball diamond.

There are many famous baseball stadiums in the United States; Fenway Park, Yankee Stadium, Camden Yards and of course, Wrigley Field just to name a few. All of these well-known fields have certain aspects that make them unique, but all have a few basic features that they all must adhere to. For instance, according to the Official Baseball Rules, which govern Major League Baseball, all the bases must be 90 feet apart in a diamond shape. Home plate must be a 17 inch square, that has two corners clipped to make a the infamous and oddly shaped 5 sided shape that has become famous to the sport. Incidentally, 1st, 2nd and 3rd base are comprised of canvas bags that are fifteen inches square. And just for good measure, the pitcher’s mound must be sixty and a half feet from home plate.

Hearing and reading about the precise measurements of the baseball diamond and the stringent adherence to rules about what may and may not be where or how, brought to mind a hobby that has similarly obsessed and fanatical fans. Of course I’m talking about the production and design of fine writing instruments.  And in particular the company known as Montblanc.

I know that Montblanc isn’t the only company that produces high quality pens, but there are two pens in particular that were brought to mind; the Montblanc Meisterstuck Diamond Classique Ballpoint and the Montblanc Meisterstuck Diamond LeGrand Ballpoint. Both of these great pens have a simple ‘bat’ shape that is narrow at the tip and fatter at the cap when set for writing. The Legrand has a bit more girth in the cap, but still holds the elegant simplicity that Montblanc does so well. These pens have twist mechanisms to deploy the ballpoint and much like the famous diamonds of baseball they are all constructed with precise rules, but each has its own individual character just waiting to shine in the hands of the right writer.

Take some time to look over these two great pens at Executive Essentials. If you do, you’re bound to see that Montblanc has yet again hit a home run.
