It was 1972, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, when KOB Radio station manager Dick McKee came up with the idea of using a hot air balloon to help celebrate the radio station’s 50th birthday. At the time, there were very few people in New Mexico that had hot air balloons, but after speaking with several 
balloonists, McKee determined that not only could they get a large gathering of balloonists for the fiesta, but they thought they could break the record for ‘largest gathering of hot air balloons’ in the world. A record set by a group in England when they launched 19 balloons at once. Unfortunately for McKee and his balloonist friends, due to bad weather, the fiesta of 1972 only brought together 13 pilots out of the 21 that had signed up to attend. But, undaunted, Mckee and the group continued the fiesta on a yearly basis and eventually, the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta became the largest hot air balloon festival in the world. A title it still holds today.
